Laga Handbags Having seen first-hand the devastation in Banda Aceh, Indonesia after the most destructive tsunami in our lifetime, we were moved to tears and then to action, to try and make a profound and lasting difference in the long-term effort for rehabilitation of its victims. We formed Laga Designs International, Inc. to provide employment and income by hiring and training those who lost their livelihood, but what transpired was much, much more: we developed a personal relationship with the local people of Aceh and left our hearts in their homes. Our hope is that the memory of what happened to them on December 26, 2004 will remain in the hearts of those around the world so that the work to rebuild their lives will go on.
Louise and Roy Van Broekhuizen of Laga Handbags created an industry in Indonesia. They worked with local artisans to design bags that incorporated local embroidered design and American style. With the help of their Indonesian partners, they built a plant and trained employees, mostly women widowed by the tsunami, offering more than Fair Trade compensation. Now Laga Handbags has established a very successful line and subsequently a livelihood for the Indonesian artisans.
