Inside Afghanistan was a nonprofit founded and operated by Bonita Chamberlin. She taught women in Afghanistan how to make jewelry using the semi-precious stones that no one knew existed until Soviet bombs unearthed them. She brought the jewelry back to the states where the demand grew greatly. Bonita has since retired.
In 2004 Roy and Louise Van Broekhuizen’s church leader, Rick Warren asked them to go to Indonesia to help the Tsunami victims. When it was time to go home they couldn’t just leave. They had to find a way to do more and Laga Handbags was born. Watch this video to hear their amazing story.
Rebecca Kousky made up her mind right out of graduate school to start a nonprofit helping women in developing countries achieve a sense of self reliance and that’s exactly what she’s done. This video was filmed in 2009 and since then Nest has grown into a force for real change as they’ve partnered with larger firms such as Mayet of New York and Reef of San Diego.
